Concepts for
Adaptive Learning
Technology and Computer Training Program
CfAL’s program offers more than 10 hours of basic computer training, with a focus on workplace skills, and a refurbished computer for program graduates (along with one year of technical support).
Report: Demographics and Employment Survey
Over the last three and a half years, 614 participants have completed the program and received a home computer. This year’s grant supports 200 participants and the opening of a new digital literacy center in West Rock, our third location.
“50% of participants report that they had not used a computer before.”
An independent survey of program gradutes found that…
78% of parents reported being more engaged in their childrens’ education
94% of parents reported that their children had improved their grades
45% found a new job or promotion following graduation.
65% of program graduates were still enrolled in continuing computer skills education
Science Park Literacy Center
In the first year of CTNext support, CfAL opened an instructional computer lab and classroom as part of Science Park’s Literary Resource Center. Alongside partners Literacy Volunteers of Greater New Haven and New Haven Reads, this Center built on former Mayor Toni Harp’s vision of digital skills as part of free literacy services available for New Haven residents.
Farnham Neighborhood House
Two years later, another center was opened with a new partnership at the Farnam Neighborhood House, with additional space to refurbish computers.
A Growing Program
The program has continued to expand with computer donations from Yale University and Pratt & Whitney, virtual courses during the pandemic, and new partnerships with New Haven Public Schools, the Housing Authority of New Haven, and Comcast. A third literacy center is in development in West Rock.
